Belize Country Summary

July 30th, 2007 | Print This Page

Route: Bus and Ferry from Guatemala to Caye Caulker - Chetumal, Mexico

Total Number of Days: 5
***See below for breakdown

Budget:
Overall Average Per Day: $42.50

Interesting Expenditures:

  • Unexpected Departure Fee: $18.75
  • Ferry from Belize City to Caye Caulker: $7.50
  • Cost per Night At Our Favorite Hotel Mara’s Place: $37.50
  • Amount that Mara’s Rates Increased Per Night in Two Years: $7.50

Food and Drink: Belize is a great place for seafood. They tend to do their seafood on the barbeque. There is a lobster season and a conch season, so depending on what season you’re in, you can’t go wrong by going with one of these.

Must Eats:

  • Bailey’s Colada: We’ve never seen a Bailey Colada in the States, but this is a delicious, creamy Pina Colada minus the Pineapple plus Baileys.  It’s amazing.
  • Conch Ceviche (when in season) and Conch and Lobster Fritters (when in season).
  • Barbeque Lobster (when in season), especially at Jolly Roger’s grill on the beachfront.

Highlights:

  • Returning to our favorite Caribbean island for R&R.
  • Sharing a Bailey’s Colada and watching the sunset on the Split (while swallowing our bitterness that the Lazy Lizard is under a new ownership that no longer has good 2-for-1 Happy Hours).
  • Dining with Maurice at Wish Willy’s.
  • Morning jogs down the island.

Best Deal:
Wish Willy’s: It’s a restaurant run by Maurice in his backyard.  Each night he cooks up a special meal for $7.50.  There’s free all-you-can-drink Rum Drinks from 6-9pm, too!
